SCHOOL COMMITTEE
HOKITIKA MONTHLY MEETING. The Hokitika District High School committee met on Monday evening when there were present Messrs A. C. Armstrong (chairman), J. Conning* A. McDougall, H. W. R. Sweney, R. Redder, V. M. Shannon, F. Cuesterman, J. J. Breeze, and W. E Richards.
Nurse Pitt reported that a total of 7Ci 2 operations had been performed at the clinic during February. New patients examined numbered 18. A total of 194 operations were performed in January. A donation was received from the Christchurch Sunday School Teachers’ Association for the use of the school for the summer camp in December. A comprehensive report, of the business transacted at the last meeting of the ■ 'Canterbury School Committees Association was received from the delegate (Mr T. Nuttall). In reply to big request, it was decided to' reply stating that, a s the result of the new school age the roll number at tlie school had decreased by approximately fifty. Tlie rector (Mr J. L. Menzies) report, ed that, in the secondary department, the roll was 116 (72 boys and 44 girls), the average attendance being ICS. In tlie primary department the roll was '283, and the average attendance 262 Messrs C. L. Harper, and F. L. Cassidy, and Miss E. Chesterman had commenced duty on the staff. During 1932 five pupils passed the matriculation examination, and one the account-' ants’ preliminary. Fourteen pupils were awarded senior free places, while one pupil gained a pass in the senior Government shorthand-typist examination, requiring a speed of 110 words a minute. Mr Stevenson, of the Department of Agriculture; had conferred with the Rector regarding the scheme for pasture experimentation on the section opposite the school, a small area of which needed to be dug, while a supply of seeds, lime and phosphates) would ajjici be required.
The report was adopted. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mr Armstrong in liis recent bereavement. It was decided to write to the Mayor of Ross thanking him, for the kindness and courtesy shown on the occasion of tlie school excursion to Ross last month. The question of the school lair was left to the Rector to arrange. Messrs Shannon and McDougall were appointed visitors.
