CHAI COAL DISPUTE

LABOUR MINISTER INTERVENES CONFERENCE IS ARRANGED. (Per Press Association — Copyright.) WELLINGTON, March 6. In response to requests, the Minister of Labour, Mr Hamilton, has decided to intervene in the dispute between the coal miners and the coal mine owners at Ohai, in Southland, in an endeavour to settle the strike, which has been in progress there for about six months. The Minister stated this morning that be had arranged a Conference ot three representatives of the '{mineowners and three delegates of the miners’ union, together with Mr 0. Bishop, secretary of the Now Zealand Coal Owners Federation, and Mr J. Smeaton, representative of the unions on the West Coast. The conference wil Ita.ko piece in Christchurch on Wednesday morning and the Minister expressed the hope that a satisfactory settlement will be reached so that the miners may resume work before the end of the week.
