Last month the Westland County Council communicated with the New Zealand Railways respecting the threatened danger to the Hokitika railway bridge from recurring floods, unless steps were taken .to divert the bulk of the flood water from the centre spans where there is the gravest danger. The following reply has been received from the District Engineer of Railways at Christchurch: “In reply to your letter of 15th. instant in connection with the scour on the piles on the middle section of the Hokitika River railway bridge in time of flood, I have to advise you that the pn .ition in oonncp'.ion with those piles is being carefully watched, and I am quite satisfied that the placing of stone round the piers is the most satisfactory arrangement, from the railway poi-nit of view. I am not prepared to recommend the Department spending any money in an attempt- to divert the river down the original wharf channel.”
