DARING BURGLAR
VISIT PAID TO FLATS. MONEY AND JEWELLERY. AUCKLAND, February 27. While the occupants were asleep, a daring burglar entered at least two houses in St. George’s Bay Road, Parnell, early yesterday morning. He stole money and jewellery from thret bedrooms, in the third he was disturbed by an occupant who awakened sud denly, but the intruder managed to make a hurried escape Apparently the burglar paid his first visit to a house at 36 St. George’s
Bay Road. He entered the bedroom in which the occupants were sleeping and. without waking them, took, g gol< natch and chain, about £2 in money, and a pair of trousers. The next door house, No.. 34, was then entered. In has three floors, o ne of them beneath the street level, and is divided into three flats. The burglar entered the middle flat through a window on the street level, but found it was vacant and that locked' doors prevented access to the upper flat. Carrying with him two cushions from the vacant flat, he climbed to a. bedroom window on the upper floor. He’ managed to open it, and, using one of the cushions to stop the Venetian I blind from rattling, entered the room. 1 The occupants of the flat, Mr and Mrs W. Noton, were asleep in the bedroom, but were not disturbed by the intruder, who obtained £9 4s 6d in money from Mr Noton’s wallet in a small leather bag. The thief made a thorough search of Mr Noton’s clothes in order to find the money, and also
took about 5s from Mrs Noton’s handbag.
The burglar then unlocked the bedroom door and propped it open with a second cushion to prevent, it from slamming. He then went downstairs and entered the basement flat, occupied by Mr and Mrs Monro. He entered their bedroom and took a , wristlet watch and about os in silver.' Evidently a slight noise awakened Mr Monro, who noticing the figure of al.man in tlie room, called out asking him : what he was doing. " “ The intruder immediately dashed out of the house into St. George.V'' Bay Road. It was then nearly dawn, ana the man was noticed in the street by a railwayman who was on his- way to work. However, he pulled... his ‘ cap down over his eyes and ran down a carriage-way into a. gully where some bush afforded excellent cover. .
