Aft©r a motor tour round the North Island, which he financed by .issuing valueless cheques at various hotels in paying for his arid his wife’s' lodging, Norman Robert Stone, insurance agent aged 44, pleaded; guilty before Mr Page, &M,, to eight rimrgPft of obtaining sums amounting to over' £2O by means of valueless cheques. The police said accused had borne an excellent character. When approached by a detective, he did everything he ould to assist them. Counsel said accused’s wife was ill fore some time, and he promised to take her to Whakatane to see her sister, who was seriously ill. He expected to get money at the end of the year, and, as he did not wish to disappoint his wife, he- set out thinking to be able to settle up when he came back. The* money did not come to him, however, and he was placed in his present position. The Probation officer gave accused a good character, and lie was admitted) to probation for twelve months, and ordered to make restitution.
