A serious split in the ranks of the Government’s- Conservative supporters over the Government’s Indian policy was revealed at the annual meeting of the National Union of Conservative Unionist Associations, held in private, and attended by four hundred delegates from the whole country. Tne speakers included Mr W. Churchill, Sir iS. Hoar© (Secretary for India), Lord Stonehaven, Lord Stanley, Mr Butler (Under-Secretary for the Indian Office), Captain Hudson (Government Whip). -Mr iChurohil was cheered as he vigorously criticised the Government, and demanded that the Indian policy be submitted to a free vote of the House of Commons.

Being; dissatisfied with Sir S. Hoar’s reply, refusing this demand, Mr Churchill submitted a motion deci'arin'g that the establishment of responsible government for all India on the principles of Western democracy, would be" injurious to India’s welfare, to British trade, and to the strength of the Empire.

The Chairban declared the motion lost on a show of hands.

Mr Churchill, amid excitement, then insisted on a division being taken on the House of Commons method, when the motion- was only defeated by 189. votes to 165.
