PLANS UPSET
EXCHANGE INCREASE THE CAUSE AUCKLAND, February 27. The effects of the raising of the exchange rate were referred to by the Mayor of Auckland (Mr G. W. Hutchison) in welcoming delegates to the annual conference of the New Zealand Master Grocers’ (Federation. “I had felt that 1933 was going to mark a new era,” said Mr Hutchison. “I had been confident that the City Council would be able to extend to ratepayers a reduction in rates, and by a series of constructive works to offer employment to many of our unemployed citizens. However, as a result of the setback we received by the raising of the exchange rate, our plans have been upset, and what the future holds remains to be seen. The raising of the exchange rate has added greatly to my burdens.
“Now the Government has roped in all retailers to collect its taxes for it, and I often wonder whether the Government has really considered the cost of collecting the sales tax through auditing and inspecting,” Mr Hutchison continued. “However, I consider that the sales tax is more equitable than the raising of the exchange rate and the petrol tax.”
