RADIO SETBACK

USE OF RECORDS DISCONTINUED

NOTICE TO “B” STATIONS

(ter tress-Association-- iopyiigkt j WELLINGTON, February 28. The headquarters of the gramophone companies: in Australia-, through their Ne\v Zealand organisations, have warned the operators of radio B stations agjainst the uis© of records. Their notice to the B stations suggests, total prohibition, hut the Broadcasting Board has already negotiated for records with tiie companies, and hais arranged for the restriction not to affect the YA stations drastically. The action has been taken by all the principal record Companies on account of a slump in record sales since the B stations began operations. The manager of a New Zealand record company allied to one of the largest manufacturing firms irii Australia, said to-day the manner which records had been broadcast meant that the owner of a radio receiver was virtually the owner of a gramophone without the necessity of buying records. Mr R-. H. Nimmo, managing director of B Station 2ZW, said lie had received a bald notice from three record companies that the transmission of records should cease. He hoped negotiations similar to those of the Broadcasting Board might enable the B stations to enjoy, the same privilege as the YA stations. If the notice from the companies -were enforced to- the letter, it would mean the elimination of (the B stations altogether.
