NELSON HOPS
NEW DEMAND EXPECTED. NELSON, February 28. New Zealanders do not expect to be very closely affected by the result of a Presidential election in the United States, but because of the election last .November of Mr F; D. Roosevelt, on a wet platform, hopgfdwers in Nelson are, more .cheerful iiow than they have been for several years. * For the past three or four years more hops have been grown than could be sold, a grower stated yesterday. It had been expected'that all the carryover from these years would have to be thrown away—probably to be used as fertiliser by tomato growers,. However, these had now been sold, and 'they would soon be converted into beer for thirsty Americans, he said.
As a result of the over-production of previous years, too, the hopgrowers’ organisation had reduced by one-third, for this season, the amount of ground to he planted by each member. However, thanks to Mr Roosevelt’s success, they had been told in time to get their plants in, that this restriction had been removed.
Large quantities of bops are grown in one of two of the most fertile valleys in California, some of the gardens being several hundred acres in extent—a size undreamed of in New. Zealand. Because of the reduced demand during the prohibition years in America, however, the growers have reduced their planting, gikl now . canpot. cope with the new demand.
