It will also prevent any foreign country from obtaining legal territorial rights over any portion of the area in question. The taking over of the territory will he the, subject ,of a Bill to foe introduced .at the next session of the Federal Parliament, and it i a not anticipated that there w'il'l be any difficulty in r[.’curing its passage. For many years now there has been an agitation in Australia for action in the direction now'decided upon. As soon as the Commonwealth takes over its new and •important responsibilities, a committee will b P appointed to investigate the possibility of developing the area, and so making it of benefit not only to Austro. I'.a. 'but to the '"'hole world. WHALING POSSIBILITIES.

Administration will be mainly of a terhiir.a' nature until there is a revival of the whaling industry, at present extremely depressed. It is expected that the Federal Government will ratify the whaling convention of the League of .Nations*- which will g:ve it the right to require that all whaling chips entering this sector must be licensed by the Commonwealth, and to pay -a royalty on every barrel of o:l. In return for this right, tbp Commonwealth will have to take the responsibility of regulating whaling, especially in v,d -ii-on to the prohibition of the kdljng of certain kinds of whale.,, and the taking of calves, o t - female whale® with calves. In addition to whaling, other industries, which might be carried on durin-r the favourable tim e of the year are the ,capture of so'k? and l-jons for their valuable fur jk’-nfe and o'il, and .rfso the capture of th° various -Antarctic birds, which are of considerable commercial value.
