WITHOUT FUNNELS
RECOVERY OF WASTE HEAT.
LONDON, January 3. A description is included in the annual review number of the ‘'Shipbuilding ami Shipping ."Record” of a new system of waste-heat recovery in aea.ms.hips now being introduced by Jamas Howdcn and C 0... Limited, ill collaboration with Mr John Johnson-, v, ho has been prominently identified with the construction and operation of a variety of modem steam installations. The object which has been kept in view is the utilisation not only of the sensible heat, hut al'o of the latent heat of the moisture jn the waste gases, which is .accomplished by providing arrangements for washing the gam-vs and extracting the heat by means of the washing water. Consequently, it- is held to he unnecessary to retain the funnel for the disposal of the clean cooled gases, which can be discharged through the -sides of the ship, leaving the architecture of the upper part of the vessel to be designed witbout -regard to the restrictions which hitherto have been imposed by the uptake casings. Thus, with this system, steamships may be designed without funnels.
