OTAGO WINS KELLERMAN CUP

NAPIER, February 21

The three, miles race for the Anfiette Kellerman Cup, held in conjunction with the New Zealand swimming championships, took place at .the breakwater to-day in. perfect weather, and in a perfectly calm sea. Miss M- Mathjeson (Otago) was the winner. The course at the breakwater was marked off by three buoys, the swimmers having to complete fen circuits. There were sixteen competitors from Hawke’s Bay, Poverty Bay, Wellington, Canterbury, Taranaki, Otago and thfe West Coast, 'Six completed the distance, The results were;.-Miss M. THE CONCLUDING RESULTS

NAPIER, February 22

Showery weather did not prevent the municipal baths being packed to-night for the final programme. National high light 500 intercentro sqiuad r on times brought the public to its feet; Canterbury won by a margin of seven yards, their time being smin 2 l-'ssec. Auckland was second an( l Hawkes Bay third. The men’s 440yds championship was won comfortably by Lindsay, by 20 yards, from Frankham, who finished eight yards m front of Bullivant, The time wag smin 21sec. The winner s.wam easily throughout, covering the fiost hundred yards in 61 sec. From then on there was scarcely any doubt as to the result.

From the start of the ladies’ 440 Miss Leydon (Auckland) 6warn away from Miss Ludlow, (finally blocking 6min l-ssec, or only 4-5 of a second behind the record. Ther e wa s a gap of 20 yards at the finish, which was a criterion of the whole race.

'Miss Webster, the solo starter, in the 220yds ladies breaststroke (bamp’onshi.p, covered .the distance in the excellent time of 3min 33 2-ssec.

The • 50yds invitation scratch race brought, these on the benches to their toes wfth good reason. W. Whareatu '(South Auckland) won a whirlwind race by oile and a half yard s from D. H. Symes (Canterbury) and E. McConville (Canterbury). The time was 24 2-ssec., slicing 3-5 of a second off th e record. A bare ’touch separated second and third.

In the polo championship, there was a draw, one all, and in a four minute extension, Stokes scored for Canterbury, who retain the trophy. Auckland wins th s Yaldhuvst Shield by 56 points, Canterbury being next with 41 points.
