BIG CONFERENCE PENDING
GATHERING IN SYDNEY
SYDNEY, February 9. The conference of the Plenary Council, to be held in Sydney in September, is regarded 'as the most important meeting in the history of the Roman Catholic Church in Australia and New Zealand. It will be attended by archbishops, bishops, doctors of divinity and other,* to the number of about. 60. The council wijll really herald the “intellectual” era of the Church in this part of th e world, following the close, of two decades devoted to the “building'’ era. Th e three outstanding problems that wdl be the subject of decrees issuing from the council are cer tain to be mixed'marriages. Communism', and public school education, the latter Ibeing referred to by the Church as “Godless” education.
According to one authority, there is likely to be a tightening of the 1 law governing mixed marriages and dispensations therefor, arid insistence, for instance/ on th e deletion of pomp and ceremony at the marriage when olio of the contracting parties >s not "a Roman Catholic.
