A. heavy -guff , was running at the time, and tbek-yo-ung lfiau, who was not a strong Swimmer, was swept out of. Hi s -depth by the current. His two companionsc'aine ashore as quickly as possible and : called for help, attracting the atteul-jim of Air Harold Westwood, of Auckland, who was visiting Ka-rekai'e with‘a party of friends. A rope Wfis , procured f'rpni a house near the beach, and with one end tied securely round:, his waist, Air .Westwood swam out- from the beach to rescue the young man, who was .rapid'!)- becoming -exhausted. Members, of the party held the other end-of the rope at the water’s edge, and as soon Mi Mr Westwood reached the youth, they pulled them both ashore. The young man who had-been rescued was in an exhausted state when brought- ashore) but later recovered.
