DOMINION TENNIS
'OF DAVIS CUP STANDARD
AMERICANS KEEN TO RETURN
AUCKLAND, February 14
That New Zealand tennis would soon reach Davis Cup standard was th e opinio expressed by Mr Wilmer L. Allison, captain of Hie American lawn tennis team which concluded its brief Dominion tour with a victory over New Zealand in tlie second match at the Stanley Street courts on Saturday afternoon. “Your players arc up to that standard now, as a matter of fact" added Mr (Allison. “All they i-equir e is plenty of practice in the world’s begt class. ‘We had seen Andrews and Malfroy at Wimbledon and abroad, and knew how good they were, -and so we were not altogether surprised to find such a high standard prevailing in N e w Zealand. Of course I have not seen a great deal of your tennis and am ,-peaking of my acquaintance-ship with your players in the two test matches we have played.”' The American captafn sp°ke in glowing terms of the doubles play of C- Angas, of Canterbury. Andrews and Angas gained -a victory ot-pr the world’s champion' pai r in Wellington on Wednesday la-st. While Andrews had played well on tha"t occasion Angas was the outstanding player, and, given the opportunities, Mr Allison predicted that Angas would quickly reach the very hjghest -grade in doubles play. “I -should -like to say how much we appreciated playing on your splendid grass courts,” continued Mr 'Allison. “The Adelaide courts are the finest in the world—better than Wimbledon — and the courts we played on in Wellington and Auckland wer. e not far behind Adelaide. I think this is probably due to the fact that you have a much longer grass season roan we experience in America. Such season at home lasts only from June 1 to about September 12.
v “We greatly appreciate the hospitality that has been bestowed upon us both in Wellington and "Auckland, and I speak on behalf of -all our party when 1 say we are very disappointed indeed that we ai’e unable to stay, longer. Our future engagements prevent that. We start getting ready for the Dayis Cup content in the middle of April, so that we shall not have much respite from th e game. .. We aire'all thoroughly, tired out and would appreciate a good rest. Mrs Allison and niyself -are -staying at -Honolulu for a fortnight on our way home.” -
Mr Allison concluded by saying : “You can toll your folks that I, for one, have been -go impressed with my short visit -jfeo your cou&try, and I like yousr 'climate so welt, that f -shall make every, •endeavour to. return here in 1935. The others are of the isam € , mind, and it will hot be for-one week, 1 but for tbre B or four.”
