A dance will be held in the hall in the grounds in the evening.

In rather unfavourable weather the annual picnic of the residents of Rotes and the surrounding districts- was held at Greymoutb yesterday, and was attended by approximately two hundred people. The majority of the excursionists appeared to spend the day around the business portion of . the t-own, and in the- afternoon many of them displayed interest in the shipping movements, particularly the arrival of the Gabriella.

Probably a portion, of the body of Charles Kerr AlcAuulty, who in company with Elias Nordstrom, was drowned while surfing off the Blaketown Beach oil January 24, the left foot of a in-an was found on the Cobden Beach on Thursday by Air J. Alc-Kenzi-ei. The possibility of it belonging to Nordstrom is precluded by the fact that his left -leg was intact when his body was found on the Cobdeu Beach on Sunday last.

Up to the present time, rates collected by the Greymouth Borough Council totnl about £3OOO, which although including a good deal of arrears, is wall up to -the figures of the previous years. “The rates are coming in very well,” stated the Assistant Town Clerk (All- C. An inspection of the County roads wais carried out by the County Engineer (Air J. Higgins) on Thursday, and in reply to a query by an “Argus” reporter yesterday he. said that- little or no- damage had been caused by the storm and flooding on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. He further .stated that the Grey River had carried m-o'st of the Hood water, there being little flooding in the- creeks, proving that the big rise in the Grey was due to e-now melting on the high country, and not to an exceptional rainfall as was the case earlier ill: the month.

The death occurred at the Westland Hospital yesterday of Air Jack Thomas third son of Mrs, and the late Mr Thomas, of Arahura, after r$ long illness. He was an attendant at the Mental Hospital, and was -a very popular officer being held- in high esteem by the staff a nd patients alike. The late Air Thomas who was aged 39, was- -a well-known figure in (athletic circles being a prominent runner in his earlier days. He is survived by his wife and six children, and also his mother, three brothers and five sisters, including Alessi's R. Thomas (Lands and Survey Department) G. Thomas (Menal Hospital staff), and Airs Zeigler, all of Hokitika. The funeral will take place to-morrow and will be a private interment. I

The monthly meeting of the Arahura Valley Institute was held at the residence of Mi's Ditelv on Wednesday last. Present were President (chair) and eleven members. The minutes of the December meeting were read and confirmed and the usual business transacted. Mem hem? were happily engaged at their cane and raffia work ' aiffor which a competition “grocer’s order” took place and was won by Mrs Harcourt. Tt was resolved that for next meeting each member make an article for herself or friend, and the roll call to be responded to by “my favourite bismiit.” It was also decided that as many members as possible be present at- the Hokitika racecourse to join jn th.e W.I: picnic on Thursday, 23rd. A'special- timber train from Hokitika- yeti', erday afternoon comprised 25 trucks of 750 toils gross weight. This timber will bo shipped to- Australia li.-.-.xt week by the- Kartigi, from Greymouth, which goes to Melbourne and A.deAiide, and the Kalingo, which goes to Sydney.

The insurances of the two buses belonging to Mr J. Low, which were destroyed by fire at Runanga on Wednesday night, were: £3OO on the Republic six, in the Queensland Insurance Company, and about £2OO on the Republic four in the Hanford Fire Insurance Cb.
