UNEMPLOYMENT
Sir DISCUSSION OF PROBLEM
MEMBERS AND MINISTER
WELLINGTON, February 16
A. conference between members and the Minister cf Employment to discuss informally means of dealing with pressing problems was proposed by the Prime Minister in the House to-day as 1 a preferable alternative t'o\ a fulldress debate on the floor of the chamber. - '
It was suggested by Mr Richards ißoskill) , that the .Prime Minister should set aside -a day this week to enable the House to discuss ways and moans of relieving the unemployment position. He declared that so desperate was the plight of thousands that many were trying to subsist on 11s a week, while hundreds were being threatened with eviction by the State as well as by private landlords’. Mr Richards said the plight of many expectant mothers was such as to cause serious results both to parent and child.' The situation was fraught with grave possibilities. Mr Forbes said it would not be possible to set aside- a. day this week. There already had been several full debates on the question’, but they did not seem to have- produced any practical results. “It would be very much better if members interested were to meet the Minister of Employment and discuss with him what can he done,” lie said. “It would a more practical way of dealing with it than by having a discussion which usually causes a certain amount of heat and produces no results.” My Armstrong (Christchurch East): You get good advice.
The Prime Minister: We wank to get suggestions that might be helpful. By following the course I have suggested Something practical may come.
