AUDACIOUS THEFT
HISTORIC FORTRESS ENTERED
'CALCUTTA, February 15
For sheer audacity it is doubtful if a parallel can be found locally for a theft just e!i-covered. Fort William, in Calcutta, is a strongly guarded, historic fortress, complete wi;h moat and walls 12ft. thick. Sentries are always o-u guard and the fortress house's 200 British troops.
. inside the fort were kept four armoured-ears belonging to the motor section of a Calcutta volunteer battalion. The cars were required one morning 'as a - mobile section was leaving for camp at Jaffcrpore. It was discovered that the cars had been rendered immobile Lv the removal of the carburettors and' magnetos. The thieves had discovered an underground tunnel giving entrance into what was considered to be an invulnerable fort.
