THE NEW PARTY
POLITICAL AIMS OUTLINED. LEADER NOT YET CHOSEN. AUCKLAND, February 16. Some remarks on the formation of the new political party, the All New Zealand Party, were made yesterday by Mr J. B. Donald, formerly Postmas-ter-General in the Forbes Cabinet and member for Auckland East, who has taken an active part in the formation of the new organisation. The movement to form a new party, representing all sections of the community, had been on foot since last October, Mr Donald said. A meeting had then been held and it had been
decided to hold a. conference early in , the new year. It wa s anticipated that by that time the need for a new force ! in New Zealand politics would be even 'more apparent. I The conference was held and gave great promise for the future of the movement. Members and delegates wero of the opinion that a much graver crisis would be experienced in the Do- ' minion shortly as a .result of recent
Parliamentary action, and the view was held that the future called for men who would disregard sectional interests and party ties and who \yould make sacrifices for the country. Such men would he found.
The new party did not propose to enter the dispute between town ana country which had recently been given political publicity. Its members held that urban and rural problems should be considered together and a middle course steered toward ultimate solution*.
The new party was not composed of disgruntled politicians nor of individuals belonging to an older party. Strong support had been promised from all sections of the community, representing all political faiths. A foundation of the party’s organisation was laid at the recent conference and agreement was reached on a tentative policy which embraced very clearly a demand for less Government interference with private business enterprise. The question of leadership was not- discussed, as it was contended the time was not yet ripe for such an appointment to be made. “A further conference will be held in Wellington in the near future,” Mr Donald said. “Questions of policy will then be fixed and a definite plan of campaign arranged.”
