A “DUMB” PEDLAR
MANY HOUSEHOLDER'S DUPED. WHAKATANE, February 14. ; The need for a stricter supervision of hawkers was illustrated in WTiakatano this week when an amusing and, to 60in e people, rather disconcerting illustration of how .householders may occasionally be duped by plausible house-to-house pedlars, was revealed. Early in the week a' dumb canvasser had been combing the district, selling various line,? and carrying a small card setting forth his disability. His visit to the district must have rewarded him rather handsomely, as many compassion. 1 ate housewives took pity on him ana i purchased his wares. 'When leaving' Whakatane the uni to boarded a service-car. The drive r had ! been told that his fare was dumb, and J his astonishment may be imagined j vvhen his afflicted passenger addressed ! him as follows ; “You’re late, aren’t j you P I’ve been wa*tmg here for some time.”
