FINALS TO-DAY
WINNERS OF PAIRS SECTIONS The weather yesterday was again unfavourable, but in spite of two downpours which play ifor a time and covered the greens in sheets of water, once the'.rain is topped the greens recovered so quickly that play was soon restarted, and as the afternoon wore on they played in a- really first class manner that delighted the visiting players, who were loud in thei, r praise for the manner jn which th e greens .stood up to th e rough usage they received. To see the green «, sheet of water and thirty minutes later play in progress wag a matter for expressions of wonder especially 'from the East Coast- players.
'As on the previous day the Indies’ committees at both greens had a plentiful supply of dainty edibles that were very much appreciated.
The pairs competition rounds were brought to a conclusion, the ties tor sections being completed before play stopped at 7.30 p.m., after having been in continuous progress from 8 a.m. except for two half-hour stoppages owing to rain. In the play off of the ties Coombes beat Wiiibley 7 to 3 and Mercer beat Coombes 11 to 9, Mercer whin’ng th? section. Section B.—'Head and Southward 5 v ins, Dunlop, Flemins 4 wins, G. Wilson, Benjamin, ' Huddleston 3 oa'-h, Smith, Robert-on 1 win. In the paly off of the tie. Head was successful. Sect-on C.—Scott. Yager 5 wins, Morgm.4, Phillips, W. Wilson, Mogsop, Knight 3 wins, Newton 2 wins, Barnard and Kroening 1 win. In the play off of the tie Scott defeated Yager and won tli e section. ■Section D.—Peek 5 wins, Craw, Madsen 4 wins, Leach, Breeze, Stevenson 3 wins, Moss, Mahar, Law* and Pope 2 each. Peek won the section outright.
TO-DAY’iS PLAY. CONCLUDING GAMES. T/h© final of the tie in Section B was played this morning and then the finals of the rinks and pairs were commenced. THE FINAL DAY. FINDING THE WINNERS. Play opened this morning, under cloudy conditions, with fine conditions overhead and the green in capital order. The opening game was a deciding t'g Between Madden (Sydenham) and lOnight (Westport) for inclusion in <s*l.,‘h,n B. of the rinks. A gocd game resulted in a win for Madsen, by 8 to. 7. RINK SEMI-FINALS. Tho finalists of the sections of the rinks commented play at 9 a.m. before a big attendance. The draw was Stevenson v. Madsen and Page v. Mercer’. In the SteVetnson-Madson game .the play was even throughout with a slight- advantage in favour of I Stevenson. When 16 heads were gone
Stevenson had a lead of seven but Madsen gradually wore it clown till he wanted two to ti© on the last head. This he failed to. do, the rink playing poor shots and Stevenson won by 2l to 17In the Mercer-Page.- game, Mercer took the lead, his ■ .team ■ working well • together and he led well in spite of some wonderfully fine shots by Page, with two heads to go and eight shots behind Page got ia six, and the final head.saw Page, secure one to lose by 20 to 21, after a very fine display, in which Mercer -and Page, shone to great advantage.. At 1 p.m. the first, round of ' the ■•pairs finals were started. , At the conclusion of this round the final of the rinks championship will be played and after that the final of: the pairs. Mercer being engaged,.in both, it is impossible to play the pairs and rinks together. ..
