WORK ON WESTLAND ROADS.
REPORT BY OVERSEER.
Th e Over s eer reported on work done on the second highways during January, as .follows;
Lower Kokatahi-McArthur Road.— Repairs were effected to depressions and worn from Kanieri to McArthur load, using thirty cubic yards of gravel. In addition, short sections of road be. ■coming hard and stoney wer e surfaced with fin e gravel, of a total quantity •of 184 cubic yards. Unemployed labour was usefully engaged in assisting to fill the lofiry, clean roadside drains a na one outlet drain, also painting the ratling of tin re, e culverts and Duck Creek bridge, No. 4, and Harris Creek bridge No. 4. Drains were cleaned for thirty chains in length. Lake Kanieri Road.—Motor worn hole s and scours were repaired with gravel from Lower Kokatahi road junction to ;Lak 6 Kanieri, tables cleaned and side growth cleared for four chains in length between Black’s bridge and the hatchery. Flood damage repairs were effected to several bad scours caused by culvert overflow, filling a small ■subsidence .with gravel on the westei'u approach to McKay’s Creek bridge, cleaning obstructions from watertables between Boucher’s Oeek bridge and Ward road, ‘and the partial removal of a slip 75 yards west of the foot of Slip Hill. Also cleaning and levelling the inner- side of the road and erecting a temporary fence where the outer side of the road subsided beyond Stripland Creek bridge. Unemployed labour has been engaged in continuing the widening on the hill side which has proved very rough and stoney, necessitating the use of explosives for the removal of the larger rocks.
Detour Road. —Motor worn holes and depressions were repaired a distance of one mile. The grader was engaged ;in grading and removing the outei |grass growth on each side of the 'road .from W. Gunn’s to Butler’s corner; in addition the road surface for the full length of road. The culvert outlet at the first Lend below the mai,n highway wad cleaned for some distance below the road. Portions of the bed of the first stream were cleared of scrub and obstructions to prevent the spread ol flood water above the roadway.
RIDINGS REPORT. The Overseer reported upon the progress of work during January, as iollows: — Northern Riding—Unemployed and casual labour attended to repairs to Tereinakau Settlement road, No. o lorry being used for three days carting metal. Unemployed labour was usefully engaged in repairing Kumara road, clearing Loop line and Ohesterhejd track, #md repairing Awatuna ,to Fourth Terrace track; cleavnng and clearing lvumara to Kapitea road, repairing two Mile, Arahura Valley and JBiue Spur-Arahura roads, clearing Arahura school ground and clearing blackberry and other growth, the lower end Arahura Valley road, also assisting in repair tand other work on the main highway.
Central Hiding.—Casual labour assisted by unemployed labour attended to t flood damage repairs on Lake ’Kanieri road, also to clearing and cleaning drains on Lower Kokatahi road, filling gravel for repairs to the secondary highways, W hitcombe Valley and Stations roads. Unemployfed labour was usefully engaged in cutting new drains on Upper Municipal, and Koiterangi roads, cleaning and widening drains on Cropp’s and Wall’s roads, clearing drains and watertables Hokitika-Hau Hau and Blue Spur roads; clearing Arthurstown and South Hokitika road/5, renewing fencing at golf links, and clearing the line of new road to Mananui. Southern Riding.—The resident roadman attended to repairs to var ions roads in the Inter-Wanganui district including flood damage repairs to a culvert on the line of track below Little Wanganui Gorge, carting igravel from the maiin highway for repairs to Ferguson road. The Austin grader drawn by No. 1 lorry com,me;nced gradj'ng on )Petersen road. Richardson road is badly scoured lor half a mile from the main highway caused by the overflow from Waitangi river, ordinary {repairs to keep the road open for traffic will be effected. Okarito road was dragged, graded, and repaired with sea beach gravel.
