In the House to-day. Air H. E. Holland gave notice to ask the Minister of Alines : Whether in view of the fact that the British Navy was entering into contracts fo, r the supply of ° l which was procured from coal by l°w temperature carbonisation, and that smokeless fuel and various by-procluMs were being, obtained in 'England by the same process. h» would take steps vu secure'the establishment Q n a perament basjs of low temperature carbonisation works in th e principal mining centres of both the. North and South Islands. Air Holland added; “It is stated that th e British low temperature carbonisation process produces from -every ton of coal about three-quarters of a ton of semi-coke, about 5000 cubic feet of gas, and 18 gallons of a tar which is -converted i- n to oil.” Mr Holland sard the cheapest kind of coal is used in this process, and there is a big demand for its by-products.
