BACHELOR TAX
LEGISLATION NOT LIKELY.
WELLINGTON, February 14
Athough it is possible that th e present exemption from income tax will be reduced, rumours that -adjustments will be made in such a way as to create, jn effect, a badhelor tax cannot be substantiated and are in fact untrue. 111 an interview after the introduction of the Customs resolutions, Mr Coaies said th,:re v'er. 2 certain alterations to be made in the incidence of income taxation, and added this rather ominous sentence ; "The position that we hope to go .as far as .we can towards balancing pur Budget.” At thp moment ther e is no .'reason to believe that any further drastic measures are contemplated by tli e Government, although it should be remembered that alterations in tha incidence of a tax usually mean, in Ministerial language, increases in tfie fax.
