TITLES DECIDED LAST LIGHT
GREYMOUTH, February 14
There was a large attendance- at the Municipal Bathe last evening when • the 1933 West Coaet Swimming champs were decided. The carnival was run oft without- a /hitch and the spectators were well entertained with fast swimming, and close finishes, it undoubtedly being one of the most successful for s-ome time. The water was fairly cold after tlve recent, wintry conditions, which affected the fields to some exrent. The results were ;
MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP. 220 Awards, final.—C. 'Robertson (West, port) 1 ; L. Pound (Cobden) 2. Also competed ; A. McGee and L. Lind. Won by 50 yards. Robertson gradually forged -ahead and w°n with ease in th© good time of 2min 55 3-5 see. 100 Yards Boy’s Intermediate, -final.— W. O’Leary (Greymouth) 1; D. Robertson (Westport) 2 ; O. Fcot e (Westport) 3. Also competed : P. Diedrich. W°n by i ncheS. Time 1.11 3-5. ‘ 100 Yards, final.—C. -Robertson (Westport) 1 : H. O’Leary (Greymouth) B; V. H. Reid (Westport) 3. Also competed • H. Will s . Won by n yard, Tim© 1.8. In a gr©at Rob. ertson forged ahead and won convincingly with Reid well back. 50 Yards- Beys’ Intermediate, final.— C. Foot o (Westport) 1 ; W. O’Leary (Grey) 2; D. Robertson (Westport) 3. Also started: C. Baty and P. Diedrich. Won by a yard. Time 30 3-5-seo. 150 Yards Breaststroke, final.—W. Ravne (Greymouth) 1 ; A. King (Cobden) ■2; E. Bunt (Greymouth) 3. Also competed : H. Bowes. W-on by fifteen yards. Time 2.18 1-5. Payne established an early lead, and won with ease.
50 Yards, final.—K. G*iffen (G™ymouth); H. O’Leary (Greymouth) 2; W. Keesing (Westport), p. Hart (-Cobden) and V. H. Reid (Greymouth), a dead heat 3. K. Griffen won well by a yard from H. O’Leary, with the other three starters a further yard away in hue. Time 29 1-5-sec.
Boys’ Intermediate Diving.—P. Ryan (Greymouth 1 ; D. Rose (Greymouth) 2. Also competed: R. Davies and C. -Foote. Both the placed 'boys -dived neatly. Men’s Diving,—W. Keesing (Westport) 1 ; W. WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS. ICO Yards.—Miss J. Walls (Westport) 1; Miss L. Staines (Hokitika) 2. Also competed; Miss N. Lockington. W°n by two yards. Time 1.20. The three competitors swam very evenly for the first two lengths, when -, Miss Walls forged ahead 'and won fairly comfortably by two yards. 100 Yards Clubs’ Intermediate, final.— Miss Galbraßh (Grey mouth) 1 ; M' s >? Butterwortlh (Rr.ru) 2 ; Miss P. Reid (Westport) 3. Won by a touch. Time 1.25 3-5. Miss Galbraith, although tiring, won, after establishing a short lead at the last turn. 50 Yards.—First. . Heat; Mis s L. iStaines (Hokitika) !; Miss N. Locking, ton (Westport) Also competed; H. Ridland. Won by a yard. Time 37 l-ssec. Second heat; Miss J- Walls (Westport) f; Miss M. McLaren (Greymouth) 2, Won easily by thre e yards. Time 36. 1-5. Final; M«a J. Walls (Westport) 1; Miss L. Stainers (Hokitika) 2; Miss N. Lockington ((Westport) 3. Won by a- touch. Tune 35 l-s s ec. This was an excellent race. Walls established a slight lead, hut Miss Staines simply flew Over th e last fifteen yards, but faded only by a touch. Girls’ Intermediate Diving.—Mies J. •Knights (Westport) 1; Miss P. 'Reid (Westport) 2. .Both girls gave only fair exhibitions, showing extreme nervousness.
