At the court-martial of Singh the prisoner declared his protests against being compelled to eat and drink with Maxbhi Sikhs, drafted from another regiment, whom he regarded as “untouchables,” had been unheeded, and ho decided to kill the officer and then sacrifice himself in the cause of religion, which forbade him to feed with the lower caste

He had served in the army for over seven years and was still loyal. The hearing is unfinished.
