A HOLY YEAR
PAPAL BULL PUBLISHED. ROME, January 23. The Pope, sitting in the Vatican throilo room, suiVoundcd by prelates aiicl chamberlains in their vestments, authorised the publication of the Bull declaring a Holy Year, beginning from April.
The 8u11...an edict with a leaden seal ‘(bulla) attached to it —was then read to the large concourse of people from the piazza of St, Peter’s by the Dean of Pfothonotaries’,, who occupied a special-pulpit. Holy Year is ushered in by the opening of the Holy Doors at tbe major basilicas. The most important iccromony takes place at St, Peter’s where the Pope is carried in the Gestatorinl chair from the Sistine Chapel to tbe Holy Doors.
Descending from his chair, the Pope taps l three times on the doors with a golden hammer, and workmen immediately tear away the masonry, which is eagerly gathered up by tbe populace as relics.
