AVIATION

SUGGESTED VISIT.

OF KINGSFORD SMITH. Discussing with our' representative, the proposed visit to Hokitika of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, Mr H. T. Parry, chairman of the local Aero Club, mentioned that Lieutenant White is expected over here next week to inspect the Westland Aerodrome. Should the grounds be considered satisfactory Sir Charles will be informed and arrangements made fo“r a visit. The presence of the world famous airman and liis historic monoplane, at Hokitika would, apart from its great importance respecting aviation, be of exceptional interest, as visitors from all over the Coast would be present for the occasion and create an eventful day for the town.

Mr Parry mentioned the centre of of the Aerodrome required urgent attention. Very little work had been expended there, where it was most important, and its present state constituted a danger to visiting aircraft. Much disappointment at its incompletion is expressed by those using the ground, more especially when considering the amount of labour available for such work. There wa s still time however, to prepare the centre section in order for the proposed visits, and on behalf of pilots and members of the Aero Club, and certainly the public at large, he honed the authorities would do their best to hasten matters with that end in view. The Club appreciated the work already done but-, one could not but help notice the. length of time taken over the work. A good aerodrome is a valuable asset to a. town and the good people of Hokitika will not be lax in appreciation of those responsible for placing their own prominently in the arena of aviation.
