At Liverpool coal mine yesterday afternoon,' Mr George Newton, a trucker, and Mr Jerry O’Neil, a miner, both had several fingers severely crushed between trucks, Last evening a fall of stone took place, and Gilbert Walker, o. shiftman, single, received severe injuries, which necessitated his removal to the Grey Hospital.

A member of the nursing staff of the Waikato Hospital, Miss Lila McCardle, nqvd 22, whose parents live at Raglan, was thrown from a hors© while riding in River Road, Claudlands, yesterday. After throwing her, the horse relied on her and broke her ankle. Nurse McCardle was admitted to the Waikato. Hospital, where she is making good progress.

A notable swim was achieved by two ycung Wellington girls last Friday evening when they swam from the western side of Evans Bay to the Miramar Wharf. There were Miss Muriel Lukin, of Tvit'oirnie, whose age is 1.7 years, and her sister, Miss R.ona, aged 15. They were accompanied by Constable F .W. Lefort ot the Mount Cook police, who stated that the swimmers finished very strongly. The swim—about a mile and a half —- occupied 65 minutes. Half way across they encountered a very choppy sea,

Real cries for help interrupted a life-saving competition at Fatea: (recently when teams were contesting for the Patea Reach Shield. A young man named Kavanagh, who is employed at the Patea freezing works, had been swept between the walls out of his deoth by. the outgoing fide, and had got into difficulties. At the time his cries were heard the Castlecliff A term had just- left the water with their “patient,” and it was a matter of moments before the line was once more in the water and Mr R. Adams, of the Patea team, was on his way to assist Mr Kavanagh, who fortunately, was none the worse for his experience.

It D for that reason that one has to be- sympathetic with witnesses, who sometimes must Del that they are regarded as semicriminals, so much ifl their evidence criticised by one party or the other.”

Archbishop Redwood said in his address at the annual meeting of the Early Settlers’ and Historical Associaton of Wellington on Monday that on March 17, 1984, if lie Mere spared, he would celebrate his sixtieth year of office as a bishop.
