RESULT OF ELECTION
AMERICAN LAWYER’S VIEWS. SYDNEY, January 23. Mr Roosevelt’s election as President of the Unfed States makes inevitable a- repeal of the Volstead Act to peiinit of the reintrcductiou of at least light wines and beers, according to Mr Reuben Foster, an attorney from Baltimore (Maryland, U.S.A.) who retched Sydney by the Maunganui on Saturday. Mr Foster said that the geneial feeling, in America since the election of Mr R-ooseyelt was one of optimism. He was regarded as. a very able man, who would tackle the tasks ahead conscientiously. Many matters, including the war debts question, would probably be straightened out, and a higher price level secured. Expressing the view that- ft revision cif the war debt* would tend to restore the- world's economic stability, Mr Foster blamed the universal feeling of uncertainty for . much .of the trouble which had arisen m the United States and elsewhere.
