WARLIKE PACIFISTS

WARNING TO' LEAGUE LONDON, January 15. “Some of the most bellicose people I know are among tbo most ardent supporters of the League of Nations,” declared the Bishop of Carlisle (Dr Williams) in a speech at a Keswick League of Nations Union meeting today. The Bishop warned Ids hearers that he might say some things which might 1 not he altogether palatable to the more fervent supporters of the League of Nations Union. “They must really moderate their bellicosity if they are going to be persuasive in their arguments with ether people,” lie added. “The chairman to-night said in almost his first sentence that the League of Nations Union existed to bring pressure to bear upon the Government. I would appeal to the ardent supporters of the League of Nations Union to realise that perhaps the Government is now and again justified in bringing a little gentle pressure to bear upon them. “I don’t think there is a stronger supporter of the League of Nations Union than the present Prime Minister, and of all the statesmen in Europe the statesmen most in favour of a just measure of disarmament gild of peace are the British. 1 think it would really be a bettor policy if wo did not always talk about bringing pressure" to boar upon them, but assured them that wo stand solidly- behind them and ‘are giving, them unswerving and undeviating support.”
