ABSENT FROM WORK
MEN ON RELIEF JOBS BOARD DEFINES POSITION PUKEKOHE, Jan. 21. Concern was expressed at a meeting the Pukekohe Borough Council this evening in regard to certain provisions in a circular .recently issued by the Commissioner of Unemployment, Mr G. C. Godfrey. ISie circular estates that in itlie event of a- relief worker under No. 5 scheme missing a day’s work, the wages so forfeited mu-st b-s refunded to the-Unemployment Board. It also provides that unless the worker's absence is due to illness he shall not be granted further work in lieu of missed employment. Members of the council remarked that the circular would discourage relief worker,s from seeking other cm. ployment and 011 the motion of Mr G. T. Pa-rvin, who presided, it was decided to lodge a protest. Relief workers who obtain private employment for two weeks cannot undertake relief work again until they have “stood down” for a further two weeks, and provision is made in the circular that certifying officers can reduce- the “stand down’’ period to a minimum of one week when the circumstances warrant. .
