LATE LOCALS

An escape from what might have been serious injury occurred on the cycle track on Cai=s Square last evening during the course of one of the races. A child - had wandered out on to the track and was there when the cyclists came, round. It appeared'as if the child would have been knocked over, but the cyclists managed to swerve to either side, leaving the tiny tot scared, but uninjured.

An attack by an Alsatian dog was made-upon a little boy on the Hokitika beach yesterday afternoon and as a result- lie had to receive medical attention resulting in five stitches -being inserted in the upper part of Ills leg. The boy was Pat Atkinson, son of Mr J. Atkinson, of Stafford Street. He was playing on the beach at the time and was not aware of the dog’s ipresence until it was on him, and he r^civet an ugly bite before the Alsatian made off. Another instance is reported in which Mr F. Eggeling, of Tailored Street, was bitten by another Alsatian dog when in Stafford Street earlier in the- week.

Demonstrations of the Temp’.c-Ox patent humane killer have been made this month by Mir J. J. Hollingsworth, inspector to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, at the Auckland municipal abattoir,, the Westheld and Southdown freezing works, and the works of 'R. and W. IHllaby.
