The death occurred at Wallsend, yeserday afternoon, after a short iiltuvq (,f Mrs Elizabeth Richards-on, aged 77 years. Yesterday afternoon, the Croquet Club held one of their popular social afternoons when the lawns wore in lexeellent order after the previous nights heavy rain. O’Brien Mender for Westlmd as follows: — In further reference to your representations regarding flic maintenance of the telephone line serving the South Westland district: I beg to inform you that the settlers concerned have now offered, to maintain the sections of lire between Haast and Oknru and between Bruce Boy and Paringa. The department has decided to, accept thi s offer, and at the same time to supply any necessary material required. Any maintenance work carried cut by the settlers is to be supervised by Overseer Conradson, of the Public Works Department, with whom a special arrangement has been made. In regard to the Paringa-Haast and Blruce Bay-Waiho Gorge sections: In view of the fact that no satisfactory settlement with the settlers can be reached, my deparment has decided to make other arrangements for the maintenance of these sections. I trust that this will prove a satisfacorty solution of the difficulty.
