CORRESPONDENCE

CHILDREN AND CYCLE RACESSir.—l would like to draw the attention .of the parents and guardians •of the children,, v ho. attend the evening ■■meetings of the Cycling Club in Cass Square, to the fact that children not under proper supervision constitute a dangerous element .at thes e meetings. At last’ night's meeting we had an example of what might have been an accident, the dimensions of which we do not care to tlr’nk of. In this case a-small child ran aero-,3 the’ track just •as the riders wer e racing past.. It was only the presence of mind .and good riding on the part of the riders- As they swprved on eithe r side, of the Child that prevented an accident. We do not car.? to point out what might have happened but suffice jt to r,uy that when riders pome down ‘n a bunch gom e get badly hurt’. The child, being underneath the ' wreckage, would suffer most. We trust that this escape will bo a lesson to all parents who, if they have not any regard for the competing riders’ fih.fety have-' at least ; gome little parental instinct for the safety and well-being of their children. We of the Cycling Club have the •Interests of the children at heart as much as- th e interests of the riders. We want to ?e P them at the races. and here we wo 111 FI point out that the safest place for. children is up in the stand which i.s always open. Thanking you for your valuable space, Yours etc., W. A. ROWE, Secretary Hokitika. Cycling Club.
