CHURCH DAMAGED
BY FIRE OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN

AUCKLAND, January 17,
A fire. which broke out at the back of .St. Luke’s Anglican Church, Mt. Albert, shortly after 9.30 to-uiglit, threatened for a period to gut the building, which is entirely of wood. Good work by Mt. Albeit Brigade, however, confined the outbreak to the chancel and’ vestry, the total damage being estimated at from £l5O to £2OO. The fire apparently originatedtnear the )steps leading to the. vestry, hut •the-cause is unknown. The church has'; not been used for any service since Sunday, evening. The Vicar, Rev. R. G. Coates, and his family were away on. holiday, but temporary occupants of the Vicarage, next to the church, had no> suspicion of anything being amiss, until they received a. telephone" message from a lady who had already broken a street alarm box. The insurances, owing to the absence of the Vicar, were not available. '■
