Beginning on January 23 in Melbourne, a conference of all interests concerned in tlq. meat industry will deal with important problems, chief <>f which will he the arrangement on a voluntary basis of measures for the temporary restriction of experts from Australia a,s part of a world-wide plan to r c stor ( >/ price levels in the European and particularly the British markets. The restrictions imposed during November and December have had a good effect, .and the need .for their continuance is generally recognised. This conference wid also discuss improved means fo r the shipment of chilled beef. The measures of progress made in that direction in recent months have been most encouraging and it can now be said that a good prospect exists that Australia will bo .able to challenge successfully the monopoly that South America, owing to the fact that it is nearer the British .market, has hitherto enjoyed. Another conference is that flpsy--.- 1 to promote trade between Australia and lip. East. Th 0 Government has umkq. consideration .ambitious proposals for reciprocal trade treaties with China. Japan, and Siam, and with this object jn vi t .w the Consuls of those three countries have been invited to take part in this conference. Australia’s trade with the East has developed considerably in ■recent years, but it is considered that there is great scope fop further develop, ment. Japan last year purchased » record quantity of 51,000.0001 h. of Australian gi'easy wool and Chjna last y ear wa B the greatest individual purchaser of Australian wheat, not oven excepting Britain.
