She appears as a woman against whom scandal has breathed hard .because she- lias been careless in tlie selection' of her company and has become a social outcast. Already established as ali actress of sp.enclid capabilities, Miss Landi in this picture gives, what is unquestionably the best performance ot her career. • “Devil’s Ldtteiy,” based on Nalbro Bartley’s most . successful novel, embraces'tlie elements of romance, mystery, struggle, pathos and comedy. It is a powerful dr, inn de picting what happens to'people; Who he, crime suddenly rich “as "the' result of gambling. Victor' McLaglen enacts the most vital male role, a part that. gives him. the best opportunity he lias enjoyed in any of his recent pictures.

Others deserving mention for their convincing characterisations are Beryl Mercer, Ilolph Morgan, Alexander Kirkland, Paul Cavanagh and Herbert Munclin.
