RACE STAND AFIRE (Per Press Association Copyright.) WELLINGTON, January 14. Fire broke out on tile top of the members’ special stand at the Hutt Park trotting meeting to-day. By the time some buckets of water were secured the flames had a. considerable hold, a southerly wind fanning the blaze. The fire, however, was extinguished when chemical extinguishers were also brought into play. i THEFT CHARGE. TIMARU, January 14. In the Magistrate’s Court to-day, before Mr C. It. Orr-Walker, S.M., a married woman with three young children, whose name was ordered to be suppressed, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence in six mouths if called upon for the theft of two sums of £1 each from a woman friend. Restitution was ordered within : such time as directed by the probation officer. | TOWN CLERK APPOINTED. TEMUKA. January 14. 'After considerable discussions, the Ternuka Borough Council last evening finally selected Mr L. Durey, of Ricearton, Christchurch, for the position of town clerk. There were fifty-nine applicants. The final selection was made between Messrs Durey and Butters. The latter is assistant town clerk at Rangiora.
