BRITAIN’S LEAD
WORLD ECONOMICS
PRIME MINISTER'S MESSAGE. (British Official Wireless ) . RUGBY, January 13. The Prime Minister, in a message sent to the . Conservative candidate for the Liverpool by-election says:— The economic state of the world is still disquieting, but in such fundamental matters as iuter-Governmental debts, Britain iy recognised as being in a leading position in the work being done to remove that serious cause of trouble. The Government is now engaged in an endeavour to reach a set-lenient of the debt to the United States, a matter, which in view of the urgency of. world conditions, and the carrying out cf tlie Lausanne decisions admits no delay.
Among the world’s economic difficulties, Britain held her own compared with other great industrial nations, and was not in a position to take advantage of the improvement in world conditions. The Government was striving to remove the obstacles which were delaying the international economic conference,
He adds that until that work is done there is no prospect of any serious permanent reduction in unemployment, though we are checking the increase.
Mr Baldwin also sent a message in which he claims that the Government lias succeeded in stemming the rise in unemployment, in balancing tlie budget, and effecting great national saving in war loan interest under conversion schemes. The adoption of the tariff policy had already caused various countries to approach Britain with a view to modifying their high protective duties.
