TWO MEN HURT
SPEEDWAY RACE COLLISION. BOTH RENDERED UNCONSCIOUS (Per Press Association — Copyright , AUCKLAND, January 15. A spectacular collision between two cinder track machines resulted in both of the riders being thrown heavily and rendered unconscious at the Western Springs’ Speedway last evening. One of the riders, It. Cairns, aged 34 years, married, was later admitted to the Auckland Hospital, suffering from slight concussion and a fracture of the collar-bone, while the other, F. Day, escaped more lightly, and competed later in the evening. The accident occurred at the conclusion of the fourth heat oJ the January Handicap. The winner, D. Mattson, had already passed the post when Cairns and Day were coming out of the last corner. Just before crossing the line, Cairns, who was running last, accidentally touched the rear wheel of Day’s mar chine with his own mount, and in an instant, both machines turned over. The two riders fell heavily, both lying unconscious on the track immediately in front of the judge’s box.
