DESPERATE CHASE
SUSPECTED THIEVES
INTERCEPTION AT RIVER,
SYDNEY, December 31.
Constable Rutledge, of the Oxford police, says a Sydney newspaper, recently engaged in a desperate chase after six occupants of a motor-car who were suspected of having robbed a shop at Woy Woy. The motor. c a r had a long start, and the driver had evidently determined to reach Peat’s Ferry punt before he -wa® intercepted. Two railway employees, Jack Stewart and Officer Layzell, were working at Woy Woy when their attention was attracted by the actions of three men and thr e e women, who had arrived in •ai >notor-ca4 When the railwaymen moved toward them the men ran away from 'Leon Gilan’s shop. The Gosford police were informed by telephone. Constable R-utledge, wmo has not been long in the police force, wq« e n trusted with the task of intercepting the motor-car before it reached Peat’s Perry punt. He raced along the Northern Highway at more than 60 miles an hour before he saw the motor-car, which rounded the curves on two wheels. In the meantime Detcctive-Sei’geant Higgins .had hurried to the southern side of the stream in th e northern district wireless patrol in response to a broadcast wireless message. As Con ©table Rutledge reached the northern side of the river he was relieved to 6 oe signals from the other side .indicating the presence of the wireless patrol. Thre. e rn e n and three women, whose ages ranged between 20 and 29 years, were charged with brewing, entering and stealing.
