GERMANY’S YOUTH
MILITARY SCHEME HINT GIVEN BY CHANCELLOR. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, January 3. The “Times’ ” Berlin correspondent states: A hint that Germany is aiming at military service for youth, was given by Chancellor Schleicher during the President’s New Year reception.
Deferring to disarmament, he said that Germany returned to Geneva, in order to achieve real disarmament, and obtain some security as achieved by other nations. If she could succeed in restoring to German youth the right to bear arms, within the framework of the militia, a big step towards ending the internal dissensoins would be made.
ACID COMMENT FROM PARIS.
PARIS, January o.
General Schleicher’s statement is provoking acid comment from newspapers, which declare it deserves emphasis, as the first political manifestation characteristic of the new year, and compares favourably with M. Boncour’s pacific reply. The diplomatic body is hoping for a peaceful solution of international questions.
NEW YEAR FATALITIES.
BERLIN, January 3,
A tally of the stabbing and shooting in affrays in Germany on New Year’s Day totalled thirteen dead and 150 seriously injured.
