SWEEPS OVER BRITISH ISLES

A fierce southerly gale is raging in ph:( 'North Sea, being particularly severe on the east coast of Scotland.
Th/3 Aberdeen trawler Venetia was lost with all nm e hands, near Stonehaven, to-day. A violent . s torm swept ove r Ireland, Western England and Scotland, during the week-end. In Valentia (.reland), the force of the wind rose to over 90 miles per hour, in gusts, in one of which a sprtad of 96 miles per hour was attained.
Great damage was done to property in Southern Ireland, and th e heavy rains caused rivers to overflow theii banks. Sea walls were damaged in various parts, and sections of the railway lines in some places were torn up.

There has R n a strong gale, with high seas and heavy rain, for the last twenty-four hours. It still blowing hard.
The barometer is low. The wate r supply is temporarily out of commission. Th e banana crop v.'U probably bo damaged considerably. T’.i?re are no reports otherwise of any serjouß loss.
