FIVE RESCUES

STRONG TIDE AT SUMNER.

(Pt Press Association — Copyright.)

CHRISTCHURCH, January 4.

Owing to a strong fvbb tide, live rescues had to be carried out at Surnne>r yesterday afternoon by the Suri Club teams. In one case four persons were in distress at the same time. One woman was unconscious when brought in. She was resuscitated on the sand and subsequently given treatment for two- hours before she was able to rejoin her friends. A man bather, when about to he rescued suddenly exclaimed, “I’m done.” and was swept from the line. He was brought to the surface, and taken ashore exhausted. The beltman of the team was in a state bordering on collapse after his strenuous water work, and was not able to return to the pavilion until he had had a good spell.
