After 37 rears* service in th'e Police Force. Constable Alfred H. Jones, the Wyndham officer, is retiring on superanimation as from March Ist, when he gees on three months’ leave on full pay. Constable Jones, who was born at Me mhos Kerry, joined the Force at Christchurch in 1896 and in 1897 he was transferred to Greyniouth. After serving there for two months he was transferred to Reefton on special duty, owing to an incendiarist who was in tho district at the time. In 1899 he returned to Greyniouth, and did duty there till 1903, when he was transferred to S'bafforcl, to take charge of the polico station there, as well as the district of Goldsborough. His duties entailed those of clerk of the Warden’s and Magistrate’s Courts, receiver of gold revenue, mining registrar, and registrar of births and oaths. In 1921 (.unstable Jones was l transferred to Akar.ra a station embracing similar duties to those of Stafford. In 1917 lie took charge of Wyndlmm station, where he remains until his retirement.

During the week-end, the premises of the Westland Breweries, in Turamaha Street, Greymouth, were entered by means of a window being forced at the rear, and a fairly large quantity come to study earthquake conditions in tenders, who left by unfastening the door on the inside. .Shortly before noon yesterday, Detectives Holmes and Hay detained two men suspected of the offence. They were subsequently charged and will come before the Magistrate’s Court this morning.

During this morning residents again hoard the. familiar sounds of an aeroplans aloft as Captain J. C. Mercer, pilot-instructor to the Canterbury Aero Club, flew over Hokitika after competing a flight from Christchurch in 80 minutes. Captain Mercer will be here for a few days and will visit Wailio where he will conduct passenger flights,, returning to Christchurch during the week-end. It is expected that the local plane, which lias been laid up for some time, will be in action again in about, a fortnight
