CAR OVER BANK

MAN SERIOUSLY HURT. ' ANOTHER SLIGHTLY INJURED. THAMES, December 28. Two young men were 'injured ) one seriously, when a motor-car went over a bank a quarter of a mile south of Tapu. Mr James Docherty, of Parawai, af*ed 19, a farm labourer, received .serious head injuries and injuries to his back and shoul(ler s , Mr Noel Alexander Sanderson, of Sealey Street, Thames, aged 18, a 'foundry apprentice, }'Ccp'iv«l minor bruises. The two lads motored to Tapu on Sunday night in a car owned and driven by Mr Ray Geraty, of Mount Pleasant, Thames. On their way home at 11 p.m. the car suddenly went off at a tangent and plunged headlong over the bank on to the beach. Fortunately the tide was out and tile car landed on its side on the rocks, being considerably damaged. Mr Sanderson managed to extricat e himself and found that Mr Docherty was wedged underneath. He therefore walked back to Tapu for help. The ambulance was summoned from Thames and both Were conveyed to the hospital.

Mr Sanderson's injuries were .slight and h© will leave hospital to-day, but Mr Docherty is still unconscious and is possibly in a critical condition.

It is believed the accident was caused by Mr Docherty’s sleeve becoming caught in on e of the control levers on the steering 'wheel.
