GOODS FROM JAPAN
A TREMENDOUS INFLUX. COMMENT BY MINISTER, (Per Press Association Copyright.) DUNEDIN, December 28. Reference to the Eastern menace as something that should be regarded by the whole Empire as a matter of first importance was macie by the Minister of Finance, Hon. W. Downie Stewart, last evening. Mr Stewart said the subject had been brought up repeatedly, particularly in connection with manufactures that were competing with New Zealand goods. There was no doubt that there was a tremendous influx of such goods from Japan. He had thought that the question might have been brought up at the Ottawa Conference by other Dominions, but probably they had not yet felt the full impact of the competition. The expansion of these industries was phenomenal and the statistics were extraordinary. One was led to the conclusion that some steps must Lo taken to meet the situation.
