The plight of Whelan is serious, according to messages received by the Defence Department from Major Brearley of West Australia Airways. The department has sent two Wapiti machines from Point Cook to drop supplies to Whelan. Major Brearley s ays that the only hope of saving Whelan is to keep on supplying water by air until the machines are assisted by a strong wind so that they can approach th e edge of th e Jake and lift Whelan off.
