ELDERLY -MAN INJURED

AUCKLAND, December 29. . A middle-aged man, whose name was suppressed ;by the. Magistrate, was charged in the police court tins morning with being intoxicated m charge of a car. He was remanded on bail till Monday. The charge followed a sensational accident in Queen Str e et late yesterday afternoon, when a.*'large sedan car, apparently out of control, descended iShortland ’Street, which is steep, and dashed into the main thoroughfare-
It struck ah English visitor, Robert Dudley Walr° n d, aged 55, who had just arrival .from,- Rotorua. Walrond . was. hurled viii ihe|gjr, and knocked iuiflpnsci.ou.Sy ..The car . continued across fitredt and. struck an electric fuse box, and stopped on the- footpath.
Walrond was removed to the hospital where his condition wa s stated to-day to be not serious. INFANT’S STRANGE DEATH. AUCKLAND, December 29. In the fact that , she was only ten weeks old, Jeannie Watson Ainsworth died last night under unusual circumstances. :The mother of the child told tine coroner that she took the baby to bed with her last evening. An older child, aged 2 5 years, slept, at the foot of the bed.
She fed the baby and then fell asleep On awakening this morning she found the baby, had fallen head first into a kerosene tin beside the bed which contained water. A doctor was called, and artificial respiration for. an hour was unavailing. The inquest was odjourned.
